Bryan King - variable speed lathe review
Package was sturdy and contained everything without damage. The lathe is powerful enough to cut chromoly. I have tested mild steel, chromoly, and aluminum so far. The harder metals have a rough surface cut but that could be my cutting speed to the tooling as well. The cross slide has developed some slop as I have used it but adjusting the gibs solved that problem. The machine was fairly Trammed our of the crate otherwise. The only issue I have unresolved is a lose tool rest. I need to disassemble the cross slide to access a few Allen screws to make adjustments. Otherwise, aside from a few loose screws, this lathe is an excellent machine. I think after adjusting I can get accurate to a thousandth of an inch in hard metals with some minor surface blemish which can be buffed with Emery cloth.

It had a lot of cosmetic scratches and the guard for the chuck was missing a part to keep it out of the way ( it looked like it was inadvertently not installed. The Operators manual is a cheap print job that is a blur. There is no contact information for any warranty or anything else. As an example of how sloppy it was put together one of the wrenches (16mm) is the wrong size- it should be 17mm. There is a decent You-tube video from England that shows the faults of this machine notably the spindle wasn't machined accurately on their machine. Contacted Amazon and they refused to say where to get parts. Instead they wanted a photo of any part I wanted, I guess they don't want anyone to know who to contact other then themselves. If there is no warranty or contact info the parts list in the owners manual this is a problem. On the one I bought the gear train was off so I had to grind down the swing quadrant ( about 3/32" ) Having said all this I do plan on keeping it. Very sloppy manufacturing and crating.

I have not been able to find any support to fix the alignment problem with the tailstock. if the tailstock worked correctly the machine would be fine. I bought a free center and inserted it into the tailstock to make the lathe somewhat functional. That worked, sort of, but now I cannot remove the live center to use the drill chuck I bought to fit the tailstock. Overall, the defective tailstock makes this machine unsatisfactory, a path to repair/replace the tailstock would go a long way to make this a good product.

Shipping was timely, packaging good,no damage. Pillow block on right end of leadscrew needed .030 removed so half nut did not drag.Missing flat spring in crosslide feed dial.Fabricated new one from feeler gage.Missing 4 gears from package that the front panel chart calls for common threads, perhaps I received doubles of whatever the packagers had on hand. The manual states different gears for threads than the front cover chart.Other than that plenty of power and reasonable accuracy!50 years + machining experience now retired!

I had to make some major modifications to tail stock to get it to work, the hand wheel would not turn. They reimbursed me $300.00 for that problem. All the dials on tail stock, carriage, cross feed and angle feed all are in metric which I don't like. It will not cut most of the Standard American threads ie; 13, 16, 18, 8, threads per inch. very very hard the be able to communicate with a support group, if you lucky enough to get someone to help you. Would never buy it again or anything from Vevor.

When I received the lathe, The crate had a hole in it from a pallet jacks down and some of the parts had fallen out including the retention device for the tail stock. The tail stock was loose in the crate and had moved around while in transit and damaged the control panel the lathe was all scratched up. I talked to the manufacturer via email. I gave them everything they asked for as far as pictures and documentation but all they would do is ask for more a stalling tactic in my opinion. I believe they had no intention of ever making this right.I would spend more money with a more reputable company and be warned there was no recourse through Amazon as far as I know on this product.Again do not waste your time or money with this brand!! I should’ve went with Little Machine Shop!

This machine is junk. #1 it did not come with the steady rest as advertised. I am still waiting 4 weeks later to receive it in the mail. #2- the rails are ground backwards, it has 2 different bearings, one of which is the complete incorrect bearing so I’ve had to replace them. #3- it is full of metal grime so it has to be cleaned before anything can be done. #4- it must be overhauled completely, use grinding compound to make it slide properly; it is off so badly there’s no way it can be used to machine anything. If you are not willing or have the knowledge to rebuild this machine DONOT PURCHASE! It is awful and not worth the money and aggravation. It should be advertised as a kit because you will have to rebuild it to get it to work and that’s IF you receive all of the parts that go with it.
