About this item

  • Front-Runner: The Endura 4 sets the standard as one of the best-selling folding knives ever made. All members of the Endura 4 family include a four-position clip, a high-strength back lock mechanism, and Trademark Round Hole.
  • Light and Durable: This Endura handle is fabricated with Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon. FRN is a polymer mixed with glass fiber that is injection molded and formed into a sleek textured handle, creating a lightweight yet high-strength knife handle.
  • A Secure Grip: To provide a non slip grip, these knives are molded with our patented pattern, Bi-Directional Texturing. This texture pattern consists of opposing graduated steps radiating outward from the center of the handle.
  • Advanced Cutting Performance: This lightweight knife includes our Saber Grind blade. This grind maintains full thickness through a larger portion of the blade for increased strength and elevated cutting performance.
  • Double Duty Blade: This blade includes both our PlainEdge and SpyderEdge grinds. This CombinationEdge blade offers powerhouse cutting performance on fibrous materials as well as the control and precision of the non-serrated section of the blade.

Endura 4 Signature Knife

CRAFTED FOR LIFE

Released in 1990, the original Spyderco Endura and its smaller counterpart, the Delica, literally redefined the concept of today’s folding knife. As the very first lightweight, clip-carry, one-hand-opening folders, they set a new standard. The fourth-generation Endura continues to set the standard as one of the best-selling folding knives ever made. In the process, it has also spawned an entire family of variations to meet virtually every user’s needs and preferences.

The direct descendants of the original model, Endura 4 Lightweights feature skeletonized stainless steel liners and injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handles. They come in a full spectrum of colors and a variety of different grinds, edge configurations, and blade steels.

Specialized versions include one with an Emerson Opening Feature that automatically opens the blade as the knife is drawn, a blunted red-handled trainer, and all-new hand-dyed Zome versions with multicolored handles.

Wave opener: a gimmick that actually works
I own a lot of Spyderco knives, and a lot of knives in general, but until recently I didn't own a single model with an Emerson wave opener. It always seemed like something that might be useful for a solider or cop, but when would I ever need to have a knife opened and ready to use that quickly? Then last summer a big dog owned by an irresponsible idiot slipped his leash and tried to murder me in a public park. A knife is not the ideal weapon in such a situation (that's specially formulated animal deterrent pepper spray, which I have) but I figured if I was going to carry a knife anyway, I might as well have one that could be deployed quickly in stressful situations and when my hands were slick with blood...like when a dog tries to kill you at lunchtime in a city park. So after doing a bit of reading and speaking to some experts, I ultimately settled on a knife with a wave opener. I wanted a standard blade profile that could be used in a thumb-forward saber-style grip, not a karambit or heavily curved "talon" blade, which eliminated most of the options from other companies like Cold Steel, and also the Matriarch and Civilian models from Spyderco. However, I was already comfortable handling Spyderco knives, so I settled on the Endura because it was the largest of the wave-opener equipped models with a traditional blade profile. It was also half the price of the cheapest Emerson, which are unquestionably great knives, but that seemed like a bit too large of an investment in a style of knife I'd never used and wasn't sure I'd like. As it's turned out though, I love the wave opener and the Endura overall has been excellent: after a few hours practice, I could reliably deploy it nine out ten times, and after a few weeks that number was ten out of ten; the VG10 blade steel has fair toughness and pretty good edge retention, but it is extremely stain-resistant and it takes a razor-sharp edge, which are the perfect attributes given my intended use of the knife. So too is the hollow-ground, spear-tip blade profile--it really is the sharpest knife I own and cuts, slashes, and stabs with equal utility. I am not, however, a fan of Spyderco's FRN scales or their pocket clips, so I invested in a set of blue denim micarta scales and a titanium deep-carry Lynch NW clip, but I don't consider either of those, or the Wise Men Co. signet ring I also put on, to be vital additions everyone must make to their Enduras. More like personal preferences since the OEM Endura works fine right out of the box. I just prefer to do whatever I can to make the knives I carry regularly, especially ones that might be used under stressful conditions, as comfortable and easy to use as possible. I am quite happy with the new hardware--the scales feel much better in the hand, the ring makes deployment more reliable, and every Spyderco rides better with a Lynch clip--but all together they doubled the cost of the knife, which might not be for everyone. I guess I could have just bought an Emerson CQC for what I've spent on this Endura, but I don't think they make signet ring backspacers for Emersons, and I feel much more confident pulling this knife from my pocket with one finger in the ring. And the micarta scales look cool.

I've only had this knife for 48 hours so this is mostly an initial impression.

Product Description: The blade is about 3-1/2 inches long and the handle is nearly five inches long. When opened, the knife is about 8-1/2 inches. It fits my short, wide hands quite well. It's a fairly big knife but has a rather slender profile so it fits into a front jeans pocket fairly well and Spyderco did a great job of keeping the weight down by skeletonizing the liners and using a high quality plastic (they call it fiberglass reinforced nylon) handles. The pocket clip is secured to the knife with three small torx head screws and is reversible to either end or either side. That doesn't make sense for a knife designed for tip up carry only, but they use the same handles on Endura knives without the wave feature so it saves them another part to inventory. The lock is very positive and audibly clicks when engaged.

Sale/delivery rating: I ordered this knife via Amazon Prime. It arrived the following day. You simply can't beat service like that so Amazon earns five out of five stars.

Quality of Product: The knife is made at Spyderco's Seki City, Japan factory and arrived sharp, well constructed and ready for use by a right hander. Spyderco has a reputation of providing high quality products for reasonable prices. I feel they easily met these standards with this product. Five stars

Quality of design: It's too early to tell. There is a learning curve with this knife. Utilizing the Emerson Wave Feature is not simply a matter of pulling the knife from your pocket with the blade swinging free and locking into place. It requires an outward twisting of the wrist and a bit of wrist snap to get the blade to open completely and lock. I've complicated the matter by switching the clip to the opposite side and trying to use the knife left handed. I'm a rightie but I believe in keeping my options open and my right hand free. That is only going to add to the time required to gain proficiency with this knife. I am confident the design is sound but I believe the time required to master the use of this knife is going to be much longer than I had initially hoped. I did purchase a training version
Spyderco Blade/Opener Folder Knife With Red FRN Handle Md: C10TRW but it has not arrived yet. Four stars - only because the use of the Wave feature is not as intuitive as Spyderco would have you believe.

Manufacturer support. Go to the spyderco website and you'll find every replacement part available for this knife but the blade itself. That is very important to me.

Overall: 4.75 stars.
