Native 5

Signature USA-MADE Knife

Spyderco’s Native Lightweight has long been the go-to cutting tool for savvy tactical knife users. The fifth-generation Native 5 version of this design raises the bar even further, combining an ultra-lightweight fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle, a low-profile black finish, and an aggressive SpyderEdge cutting edge with the advanced engineering of the Native 5 platform. This knife’s full-flat-ground blade is machined from CPM S30V powder metallurgy stainless steel and has a durable, non-reflective Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating. Its SpyderEdge cutting edge provides extreme cutting power, especially on fibrous materials. It also includes an index-finger choil for a forward-positioned grip that allows enhanced control during detailed cutting tasks.

A highly evolved back lock mechanism—one of the defining features of the Native 5 design—locks the blade securely in the open position and, along with the blade’s Round Hole, allows ambidextrous one-handed opening and closing of the knife.

The linerless injection-molded FRN handle features a deep Bi-Directional Texturing pattern for maximum grip security and includes four sets of threaded stainless steel inserts to mount the reinforced hourglass clip for tip-up or tip-down carry on either side of the knife.

Great Knife, but only if you like gripping knives using the finger choil.
5 Stars
Great Knife, but only if you like gripping knives using the finger choil.
First the good things about the knife:1- Super great steel for the price! CPM S35VN takes a razor edge and holds for a long while. Any knife guy will tell you that you are getting a great steel for the money.2- FRN bi-directional handles are super grippy and comfortable. Fiberglass reinforced handles may feel like plastic to some but they are nothing but. They are super rigid and strong. A proven high grade material.3- Silky smooth opening, it might be a little stiff in the beginning, but after some break in period it's very smooth.4- Made in America! I have a few spyderco knives, the ones made in America has very few quality control issues. Case in point, my current EDC (everyday carry) the stretch. It's my favorite knife made in Seki City, Japan, great ergonomics and very functional blade shape. But, when I got it, it had some issues such as gritty action when opening and the handle material rubs against the blade. I had to take it apart, grind smooth the lock mechanism and cut off excess handle material.5- Good size blade in a small package. Less weird looks from people when you pull it out to cut packaging or peel an apple.6- Very functional blade shape. The bad, and this is purely a preference and its only one. As pictured, there is no comfortable way to grip the knife without using the finger choil (that's the finger groove cut out next to the knife blade). If you don't mind operating the knife this way then it is super comfortable and it feels like a part of you hand. There's plenty of aggressive jimping (ridges) on the knife to keep it in place, so no worries about it sliding around in your hands.Overall I love this knife it screams quality. It will definitely be on the EDC rotation but because of the handle it won't replace my stretch.
