Day of Wrath (Dies Irae) Paperback – August 29, 2014

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 3,643 ratings

Bob Petersen arrives with his daughter at the Middle Grade school in Maine where he teaches, expecting another regular day but worried about what recent ominous news reports might portend. Suddenly his school -- along with many others across the United States -- is under attack. Gunmen burst in, slaughtering children and adults alike. This novella by New York Times bestselling author William R. Forstchen imagines a horrifying scenario where, in the course of one day, the terrorist group ISIS carries out massacres in schools and on highways across the United States. With a surprisingly small but well-organized and ruthless force, the nightmarish devastation brings America to a state of near-paralysis. Author of One Second After and Pillar to the Sky, this heart-stopping novella brings home just how fragile our defenses and infrastructure really are. It is also a story of heroic efforts to save lives, while sounding a wake-up call to American citizens and their government. From the ISIS leader in Syria, to the murderous rampages throughout the U.S., Day of Wrath reveals with chilling effect how national panic and paralyzing terror at the spiraling violence can bring a mighty country to a near-standstill. Petersen's fight to save lives and stop the merciless gunmen provides edge-of-the-seat drama. Day of Wrath is a provocative work that should stimulate an intense national debate. One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as the book everyone should read. "A THRILLING - AND TERRIFYING - TALE OF WHAT COULD BE OUR NEXT 9/11!" - W.E.B. Griffin & William E. Buttersworth IV, #1 Wall Street Journal & New York Times Bestselling Authors

The World is on fire, and you have brought marshmallows!
Wow what a ride! Are you ready? Are you counting on your government to protect you? You may have misplaced your confidence. I hope this book is the beginning of a series. While this book is somewhat fulfilling on its own, it opens up the way for at least 2 or three more books that I can't wait to get my hands on. There is no question that William Forstchen is a great author. I have read many of his books and NEVER been disappointed. What happens in this book like so many others is an academic approach to current affairs and a warning that should not be ignored. We as a nation are on the verge of losing everything if we don't make some changes in the way we react to Islam. This book is a carefully thought out rollercoaster ride of what could already be happening to us today. So here is an exciting fictional read ripped from the news headlines of the day. Read it and weep but you will enjoy it this tale which grabs you quickly and maintains a fast paced narrative from start to finish.

Good story, but seems like a setup for a sequel, which I don’t think has been written. But he’s an excellent storyteller

This is definitely one worth putting on your cyber-self. It's not often I get to say this, especially with works in this genre, but before you start reading "Day of Wrath" make sure you have a few hours to kill. Seriously - once begun it is unlikely you will stop until you see the words, 'The End;' it is that good.

Fortunately for you it is a book easily finished in a night. The storytelling is tight, the pace is perfect for said-story, and the characters are both believable and sympathetic; I found myself mentally cheering for, mourning over, and getting angry with various characters throughout the book. In my opinion stories told in a crisp yet artistic manner - reasonably priced - are the wave of the future, perfect for the e-reading experience, and the author nailed it here. Taken strictly as a fictional tale it was one of the most satisfying reads I have engaged.

Just one tiny problem with that last sentence: it's not JUST a 'fictional tale.' The scenario laid out here - an ISIS terror attack on the U.S. - is frighteningly possible, even likely given our current state of readiness. When the ineptness (dare I say indifference?) of our civil leaders is combined with ISIS' utter disregard for 'infidel' life - especially 'infidel' children - and our culture of appeasement in the name of 'coexistence,' you get a story which travels to another level. A rather sobering, indeed terrifying level.

With all this noted, I was tempted - oh, so tempted - to deduct a star due to the author's serial grammacide (to understand what I mean, see my review for Forstchen's seminal work, "One Second After"), but I decided not to do so with "Wrath." While there were errors aplenty, it looked more like poor proofreading than blatant disregard for grammar (using the word 'thus' instead of 'this,' for example); since it appears this book was published directly by his talent agency (thus semi-independently), and an inexpensive purchase via Kindle, AND the fact it was such a strong story... I was able to overlook the proofing goofs.

Setting that minor complaint aside, this is a tome I emphatically recommend. Serving as both 'engaging story' and 'cautionary prediction,' "Day of Wrath" is not a mere wake-up call - it is a swift kick in the backside. It will scare you, yes, but it will also make you aware and keep you sharp; the fact it is a captivating tale is just a major bonus.

Saw the authors interview on youtube with Jim Bakker I think his name is. There is no doubt that we are in the latter days of the Bible's Revelations. While scripture tells us its for no man to know the day and the hour of the second coming, it never mentions that we can't discern its closeness, however our God's "clock" is not the same as ours. We see frightful things these days and progressively getting worse. We are told "as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days of the coming of the Son of man". That is an excellent description of what to look for. Think of what it was like as we are told in those days.

This book is a short novel of I believe 163 pages and is quite well written, its gut-wrenching in its premise and could possibly happen, most likely on a smaller scale, but scary on any scale. Mr. Forstchen has hit on something that would really hurt us, perhaps much worse than 9-11 ever did. It is an excellent wake up call to the possibilities of having mindlessly open borders, allowing millions of illegals into the country. As well as to the dangers of political correctness in dealing with the Islam here and around the world. I am of the opinion there are no moderates in that group, only silent radicals.

In ending, the book is well worth the price, and the thought provoking theme is one that needs to be out there in our minds as we move forward. Unfortunately our political leadership, and many of our church leadership is such that we seem posed to experience many horrible things in the possibly near future, we owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to be well schooled on the subjects, prepared and standing strong.

Well written, easy read. Completed it in one sitting.

Riveting and believable; emotional roller coaster with easily identifiable characters.

Horrifying for anyone with children or grandchildren.

3.0 out of 5 stars Let’s pray that the day of wrath never dawns

“This is a book that I did not want to write”, Forstchen states in the Foreword. And that is understandable. Writing about human cruelty is hard. Writing about cruelty to children is harder. And reading about it is no less difficult.
ISIS terrorists have mounted simultaneous attacks on schools in America. Destruction has also been unleashed on the streets in cities across the country. When it all ends, leaving a trail of death and devastation in its wake, the country has been placed under martial law.
Fiction, yes. But given the state the world is in, the fiction sounds eeriely plausible. Islamic State is reportedly weakening, losing grounds fast. But in this age of half-truths and lies that go by the name of news we can never know for sure. Europe’s migrant crisis shows no sign of abetting. Rise of Donald Trump has added a sense of uncertainty in US politics.
Let’s hope and pray that the day of wrath never dawns.

Day of Wrath
A very thought provoking book.

We in UK have no way of defending ourselves let alone our school and college children.
The armed police in the UK are few, fewer in the likes of county towns or small cities. Even those police armed with a tazer would be useless in this situation. The police and the public generally accept that any perpetrator will be unarmed. To get any significant number of police to incidents like would be impossible so the consequences would be horrendous.

As police are usually unarmed we are even less able to even try to cope with anything like you portray in your novel. We would I think have to activate the military with full live ammunition and that would take time.

I doubt if any schools or other places have any sort of lock down system in place that they could even try to use.

Anything along the lines you suggest would also I expect lead to country lock down and possibly even longer term lead to possible financial collapse and that could spread. Martial Law would I fear be the end of it all.

There would also be a good chance of war and that could include nuclear war.
I appreciate you did not want to write this story but maybe it might wake up the public and hopefully our politicians though I have my doubts.
The whole world is heading for a civilisation collapse
The only question is how and when.

One point on all of this is that any collapse will mean the collapse of all the support systems like water power food transport and finance and communications.
Though how people would be able to look at government internet sites with the internet shut down I don’t know.
Immigration and border control will be much stricter possibly with armed guards and lookouts on the coast.
Life would never be the same again

We already have private security firms that work with the police, who are seeing their numbers reduce each year. But again private security is not the police, do not have the powers of the police and are not armed as the public are not armed.
We in UK are in far worse position than USA to even have any hope of dealing with anything like this.

Thanks for waking me up.
PS Loved your One Second After and look forward to your One Year After.
