About the author
Author Julie Golob is one of the most accomplished professional shooters in the world with more than 150 championship titles in international, national and regional marksmanship competitions in 7 different shooting disciplines. A veteran of the elite U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, she was named both U.S. Army Female Athlete of the Year and AMU Athlete of the Year. Serving as the captain of Smith & Wesson’s shooting team her list of titles include the prestigious Bianchi Cup, Steel Challenge, USPSA, IDPA and IPSC competitions and SHOT Business Person of the Year. She is the first and only woman to claim national titles in all 7 practical shooting handgun divisions.
Julie is a dedicated ambassador and shares her passion for gun safety, shooting sports and hunting as an outdoor television personality, instructor, writer and guest speaker. Her first book, SHOOT: Your Guide to Shooting and Competition, is a comprehensive primer on shooting sports. SHOOT serves as both an introduction to firearms and shooting for novices (with an emphasis on safety) and a guide to help experienced shooters improve their skills.
When it comes to shooting sports Julie says, “I think there is a shooting sport out there for everyone whether it’s the fast-paced action shooting sports, drilling out the x-ring or busting clay targets. I love the challenge of trying new sports and divisions. It only makes me a better shooter and I hope, by sharing my passion, I help inspire someone else to give a shooting sport a try.”
Julie's second book is one she is also passionate about. Toys, Tools, Guns & Rules: A Children's Book About Gun Safety is a tool for parents to talk to kids about firearms. Written for children as young as 3, it's a resource that grows with families. Talking to kids about firearms and firearm safety is the best way to prevent injury, accidents and deaths. Gun educations is real gun safety. Learn more at kidsgunsafetybook.com.

Here’s what happened. We were at a friend’s house and a handful of kids were playing in another room. Since my son was the youngest I went in to make sure he wasn’t destroying the house. What I found was something much scarier…he was holding a handgun and pointing it right at me and the other kids in the room. I immediately ran toward him, grabbed the gun, pointed it away from everyone, and yelled for all the kids to get out. Still shaking, I put the gun on a high shelf while I ran to tell the owner through choked back tears what had happened.
At about 2 1/2 years old, my son thought he was playing with a cool new “tool” and didn’t know the incredible damage the gun could do to him, his mom or his friends. The gun was unloaded and the safety was on, but I realize how easily that incident could have turned out much, much worse with someone getting seriously injured or killed.
I’ve learned several things through this experience, 1) its never too early to teach about gun safety 2) we can’t watch our kids 24/7, so we need to prepare them to protect themselves and 3) kids will find and get into everything, so nothing is safe!
The image of my innocent little boy holding a firearm still scares the sh!t out of me and months later instantly brings tears to my eyes.
I don’t want this experience (or anything worse) to happen to anyone, which is why I sent copies of this book to my friends with small children. I reviewed several other options and this is the best for young kids and provides good discussion guides for parents. I encourage you to spread the love by sharing my story and/or sending a copy of this book to friends/family with small children.
