Strong Magnets - use hardware to mount, not tape
The magnets are strong but will come out of the back of the molded cover if you temporarily stick them to something - like your metal box of drill bits. I point this out because I could have easily mounted the empty plastic sleeve with both magnets still stuck to my drill box. I initially tried mounting one with 3M VHB tape to the bottom of the dashboard in my Taco. In preparation, I cleaned both the magnet and dashboard location with isopropyl alcohol and dried. When reading reviews, someone had recommended that method so against my better judgement I gave it a go. Didn't even make it 24 hours before the magnet fell to the floorboard, so don't count on that product if you live anywhere where it will be Florida hot in the summer. If the magnets were fully encapsulated in the plastic, you might have enough surface area to eventually get the 3M tape to work, but because the back is open and the magnets are not flush to the back - there's a significant air space there - you have minimal contact area for double side tape use. The wings are pre-drilled though, so after sweating out a gallon of fluid, I had it mounted where I wanted with good ole 8-32 x 3/4" machine screws, flat washers and a nylon lock nut. I do like the product and would consider buying again, but nicked a star off for the open back.

Edited 8/26/2017: It's been about 10 months, and still works perfectly. I've since moved the mount to my new vehicle, 2015 Jeep JKU, and mounted it below the steering wheel. I can mount a pistol along the top of the slide, or along the side of the slide and it holds either way, both small pistols (Kel-Tec P3AT) and a semi-compact pistol (Taurus PT111 Millennium Pro).

Edited: I've been using this for 3.5 months now and it's worked great. Any pistol I've used had stayed put regardless of pistol weight, terrain, length of drive, etc. The Velcro I added has stayed on nicely and continues to protect my gun's finish. There are many competitors on the market, which I haven't tried, but for the price and quality, this is the best there is.

Great solution for carrying in car, especially a small car will very little storage like my Camaro. The magnets are very strong. I added a piece of soft side Velcro onto the mounting surface to protect my gun's finish and so that it doesn't smack hard into the magnets when mounting. I installed it using two screws with a locking washer and a nut on the back side. I haven't driven with a gun mounted yet but I can tell that it'll hold well and the gun won't spin. I installed it at a 45 degree cant so that I can naturally gain a strong grip if I need to grab it quickly. To keep the gun mounted stable, it appears I'll have to attach it to the magnets right in the center of the gun for proper weight distribution.

ETA: I've been using this daily for two months now and it's performed perfectly. The gun doesn't move at all once I set it in place. I use it for either my Taurus PT111 or Kel Tec P3AT, and it holds either one of them right where I need without spinning or moving.

We purchased both the “Gun Concealment Magnet“ by Lockdown for 14.99 dollars and also the magnet gun holster by “Magnet Gun Holster” for 13.97 dollars from Amazon in NOV2014. Note: Seller SLight LLC currently incorrectly lists the manufacture as “Gun Magnet”, it should be “Magnet Gun Holster”. Both units work well overall, but neither is perfect. The unit by Magnet Gun Holster (Made in the USA) claims to hold 25 pounds and the larger model from Lockdown (made in China) currently does not list the weight that it will hold, but it definitely holds less weight than the Magnet Gun Holster model, perhaps due to the thick rubber surrounding the magnet. Neither unit will hold up a 5-pound metal weight, covered in thick plastic, which I used to initially compare these two models.
The Magnet Gun Holster is smaller, more powerful, but covered with a slippery plastic. The Lockdown unit has a better soft rubber finish, with the two magnets further apart, for better control to prevent the gun from spinning from the stored pointing direction. Both units will hold a Sig P220 .45 pistol very well and it actually takes a good amount of force to remove this large steel pistol from either magnet, especially the Magnet Gun Holster unit. Neither magnet mounted on a “wall” by itself will hold a Ruger 10/22 rifle with a custom one-inch heavy steel barrel, without the firearm sliding down and dropping off. However, the Magnet Gun Holster with two close magnets WILL safely hold this same rifle from the muzzle, if the magnet was mounted in the ceiling. The Lockdown unit will not hold this custom 10/22 from the muzzle, because only one magnet will contact the barrel at the same time, when mounted on the ceiling. With all that said, I slightly prefer the Lockdown unit for a pistol, for most storage locations that I am using, but I am ordering only additional Magnet Gun Holsters, since they are made in the USA and are more powerful, so probably safer in a moving vehicle situation, although in a vehicle, I would probably want two separate units, to ensure positive muzzle control 100% of the time.
. The Magnet Gun Holster is better for long guns, WHEN two separate units are combined to work together.
For those who complained either unit does not work properly, I believe that they either mounted the magnet units upside down or are trying to secure a mostly plastic or aluminum firearm. Buyers should test their firearm with a small magnet before ordering EITHER of these units! Both units are worthless if mounted backwards! Test the magnet before mounting! One side of both units is extremely weak.

Good product. I purchased two for the expressed purpose of "mounting" my Mossberg shotgun under a shelf in a closet. When I did a mock up of the shotgun and magnets I was surprised that two magnets did not secure the shotgun adequately in an "under a shelf" set up. While the magnets were plenty strong enough to hold at the barrel, they were not strong enough to get a good magnetic "grip" anywhere else. That is most likely due to the shotgun having an aluminum receiver and minimal steel underpinnings rear of the barrel. Solution? I mounted the shotty vertically on my closet wall with only one magnet at the barrel. That setup was plenty strong enough to hold the 7.5 lb firearm with some creative placement on the barrel and at the stock (rested the butt of the stock on a small outcropping of wood).

So overall I am happy with the magnet(s); the coating seems very durable with the plastic covering (though next time I would recommend a coating in "plastic dip" over the hard plastic covering to add some spongy-ness to the feel). I really wish I could have mounted it under a shelf (like the pistol pictures under a table) but I understand that is not necessarily a fault of the magnet, rather the metal content of this particular shotty.

Emails to the company were answered VERY quickly and honestly, which I really appreciated. A great company that truly has an "ear" for the customer. Thank you very much!
